HOUSEWIVES, HARLOTS AND HEROINES: A STUDY OF WOMEN IN THE BOOK OF JUDGES, is our adult education program for Winter, 2009. Paul Meltzer, Pastor Emeritus of Millburn Church, will lead the discussion. The class will meet five consecutive Thursdays, January 22 through February 19, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. From Paul’s description: “It is not hard to find examples of women who played central roles in biblical stories: Sarah, Esther and Jesus’ mother, Mary, to name only three. One of the least expected places for women’s stories in the Bible is the book of Judges. All but one of the extended stories in the book of Judges (the story of Gideon) depends on the actions of women who play central roles. Not all the women in the book of Judges are named. They range from strong wives who counsel and support their spouses as equals to victims of abuse. Some shape history; others are shaped by circumstances. Some are heroes; some are villains. Some have no names; some have famous names. In other words, these women, though separated from us by more than three thousand years and different cultures and circumstances, have much in common with people of our own era. They struggled with questions of values and faith with which people still grapple. As we learn more about these women we are also learning about ourselves and how our faith shapes our lives and our world.” A sign-up sheet is posted in Lauren Hall.

Since there has been an enthusiastic response to the initial series of evening yoga classes at Millburn Church, Nicole Havelka has graciously agreed to lead a second session of six classes beginning October 14. Classes will take place succeeding Tuesday nights from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Great Room. Cost is $60 if paid by the first day of class, or $12 per class for drop-ins (cash or checks payable to Nicole Havelka). No previous yoga experience is necessary, as classes are designed for individuals with a wide range of strength and flexibility.

For Nicole, yoga has become far more than just a way to stay in good physical shape. “I started doing yoga because I couldn’t be still during meditation,” she said. “Yoga gave me a spiritual practice that worked for my restless brain.” Nicole began with the physical part of the practice but then decided to do a yoga teacher training to deepen her own ability to relax and meditate, as well as to gain the skills to pass on the great things she had learned about yoga and about herself. She graduated from Spirit Rising Yoga Studio’s teacher training in Chicago this past May.

“My ability to connect with God and myself is so much greater because I no longer focus on the anger and frustration that comes up during yoga practice and during everyday life,” she said. An ordained pastor in the United Church of Christ, Nicole has worked as a chaplain at the Allendale Association for three years.

RALLY HOME SUNDAY is September 14 with many exciting plans underway. We will have one service at 10 a.m. in the Great Room in the new wing. Children will stay with their parents for the beginning of the service but will be excused to classes after the introduction and commissioning of this year’s teachers. Plan to stay for lunch after the service, which will be provided by the Worship and Christian Education committees. The three- and four-year-old children will again start in church with their parents, be called to the front first with their teachers for time with Pastor Jed and excused first for classes. Following the service, we are asking that you not take your children out of class until 11:15 a.m., as it disrupts the lessons that the teachers are presenting. The Cherub Choir (three-yearolds through first grade) will be practicing in the Great Room from 11:00-11:15.
