OUR SPECIAL LENTEN ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR 2008 IS CALLED, ATONEMENT: THE HEART OF THE GOSPEL. The fourth in this series of five sessions on Christian understandings of atonement will consider so-called “redemptive violence.” New Testament scholar Walter Wink argues that “redemptive violence” is a myth developed throughout human history, beginning with an ancient Babylonian story. He writes, “The myth of redemptive violence is the simplest, laziest, most exciting, uncomplicated, irrational, and primitive depiction of evil the world has ever known.” What do you think? The violent death of Jesus is often interpreted as a redemptive or atoning event. Is it a blessing for us to believe that as a matter of faith? Can Jesus be a redemptive figure without the violence? Does what we believe about this affect our daily living, our relationships and our politics? Bring your thoughts and questions. You do not need to have attended prior sessions to participate in this one. Wayne Nowack will serve as leader. Time, date, and place: 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 6th, in the Adult Education Room, adjacent to the sanctuary.

Are you looking to learn more about how God works in your daily life? Want to know more about who God made you to be? Join us at Millburn Church on Saturday, April 19, for a day-long adult education program called Discover Who You Are. The seminar is designed to help folks discover their spiritual gifts, talents, passions, values and personality, which, in turn, can help them find deeper meaning in life, consider volunteer opportunities in or outside of church, work through career changes and develop their usefulness to God. Discover Who You Are has been well received in various settings, including the last meeting of the Fox Valley Association. The program is open to members and friends of Millburn Church, Ivanhoe Congregational UCC (Mundelein) and Community Protestant UCC (Mundelein), and will be led by the clergy (Pastors Jed Watson, Kris Hewitt and Alex Molozai). We will meet from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. in the Great Room of our new addition. A light continental breakfast and catered lunch will be provided. There will be a charge of $20 to cover the cost of food and a workbook. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board near the entrance to Lauren Hall. Sign up by March 30, but mark your calendar now! Please see Pastor Jed for more information.

On Easter Sunday we will have three services to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ. The Sunrise service, led by the senior high youth, begins at 6:30. A breakfast offered by the Church Board follows. The second service, at 8:30, will be a traditional Easter service, with Holy Communion and music provided by the choir. The 10:00 service, which includes a children’s time with pastor, is more contemporary, featuring the Millburn Church Music Ensemble. Everyone is invited to celebrate Easter at Millburn Church!

OUR SPECIAL LENTEN ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR 2008 IS CALLED, ATONEMENT: THE HEART OF THE GOSPEL. The third in this series of five sessions on Christian understandings of atonement will be held this week. The presentation and discussion will consider the “how and why” of Jesus’ crucifixion. Was this a political move to get rid of Jesus by the Roman and religious authorities? Did God need/require the death of an innocent Son to forgive our aimlessness and sin? The session will include an overview presentation with illustrations, spirited discussion of the issues, and an evening prayer to close the day. You do not need to have attended prior sessions to participate in this one. Wayne Nowack will serve as leader. Time, date, and place: 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 28, in the Adult Education Room, adjacent to the sanctuary.
