Lenten Education Program: Atonement, the Heart of the Gospel, Continues

Posted by pastor on 31 Jan 2008 | Tagged as: All

Our special Lenten adult education program for 2008 is ATONEMENT: THE HEART OF THE GOSPEL. “Atonement” is the title of a current movie that is an Academy Awards nominee for best picture. It powerfully raises the issue of whether atonement is possible for one’s lies and betrayals that destroy the lives of others. This movie’s focus will mark the starting point for a series of five Lenten discussion sessions of Christian understandings of atonement - especially through the crucifixion of Jesus. Did God need or require the sacrifice of an innocent Son for us to have atonement/forgiveness? We will discuss the “how and why” of Jesus’ death and what one scholar terms “the myth of redemptive violence.” The sessions will include overview presentations, some video clips, spirited discussion and an evening prayer to close the day. Wayne Nowack will serve as leader. Time and date: 7:00 p.m., Thursdays, February 14 through March 13. We’ll meet in the Adult Education room, adjacent to the Sanctuary.
